Schizophrenics manifesting the Christ archetype
Consider the common schizophrenic episode of believing oneself to be Christ. I wonder if these episodes ever occurred before the life of the historical Christ figure. If at a certain point, the mind in some people snapped and they dissociated and began to identify as a God-sent divine being. But until the existence of the historical Jesus, there was no name for this new identity (or perhaps they used the names of alternative deities in their own culture). Only after the spread of the story of Jesus Christ did schizophrenics begin associating this new personality with the figure Jesus.
So perhaps these schizophrenics do not truly believe they are the historical Christ figure, but instead are identifying as a God-sent divine being, and use the name Christ to convey this identity. Perhaps Christ is a sort of Jungian archetype, as in Buddhism the term "Buddha" refers simultaneously to the historical Siddhartha Gautama Buddha who lived in the 6th century AD, and to the Buddha nature which can be found inside all of us.
Was the historical Jesus just another human who "lost his mind" and as a result embodied the Christ archetype?
Perhaps the historical Jesus never existed, but is the culmination of countless stories of the Christ archetype shared through oral traditions.
